What the badges on search results mean
In your library, open-access PDF, no PDF, preprint and the other labels on Discover results, and what each one means for you.
Each result in Discover carries small labels under its title. They tell you, before you import, whether you already have the paper, whether its PDF comes with it, and what kind of work it is.
Do you have it, and does a PDF come with it?
Every result shows one of these three:
- In your library: you already have this paper. It can't be ticked again; choose Open in your library to go to it. See Duplicate papers.
- Open-access PDF: a free, legal copy of the PDF is available. When you import the paper, its PDF comes with it, and CurTask reads it like any other import.
- No PDF · add it later: no free PDF was found. The paper is imported with its details only (such as its title, authors, year, journal and DOI) and marked No PDF in your library. You can add the PDF yourself later, for example from your university library. See Papers without a PDF.
Before you import, the Import panel on the right counts how many of your ticked papers come with an open-access PDF and how many with no PDF.
What kind of work it is
- Preprint · not peer reviewed: the paper was shared before (or without) review by a journal. It may change, or a reviewed version may exist. Check before you rely on its findings.
- Review, Book, Book chapter or Thesis: shown when the work is not a journal article.
- A language label (for example Malay or Indonesian) when the paper is not in English.
Where the result came from
Discover searches two research catalogues at once, OpenAlex and Semantic Scholar. When both list the same paper, the result is shown once, with the label OpenAlex + Semantic Scholar. You can choose which catalogues to search under Sources in the filters.
The facts under each result
- cited by a number: how many works cite this paper, as counted by the catalogue.
- DOI: the paper's permanent identifier.
- Publisher's page: opens the paper's page on the publisher's site in a new tab.
Choose Show more under an abstract to read it all.
