Discover searches two large research catalogues, OpenAlex and Semantic Scholar, at once. You can import the papers you want straight into your library, with their open-access PDFs when they have one. Importing uses no credits.

  1. Opening Discover papers from the Global Library

    Step 1Open Discover

In your Global Library, choose Discover papers in the toolbar.

In a project's Library lens you find the same button. From there, Discover can also add the papers to that project and suggest searches from the project. See Find papers like the ones in your project.

  2. Searching for a topic

    Step 2Search

Type a topic, a title, an author or a DOI in Topic, title, author or DOI, then choose Search.

Results come in as the catalogues answer. Each shows its title, authors, year, journal, and its abstract (choose Show more to read it all).

  3. Setting a year and Open access only, then searching again

    Step 3Narrow the results

In the panel on the left:

    • Sources: search OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, or both.
    • Years: From and To.
    • Open access only: show only papers with a free PDF.
    • Hide papers in my library: leave out papers you already have.
    • Type: for example Article, Review or Thesis.

Choose Search again with these filters. In the same panel, Sort by orders the results by Relevance, Newest or Most cited.

  4. The badges and facts on a search result

    Step 4Read the badges

Each result says whether it is In your library, comes with an Open-access PDF, or has No PDF · add it later, and whether it is a Preprint · not peer reviewed. See What the badges on search results mean.

  5. Ticking two papers; the Import panel counts them

Step 5Tick the papers you want

Tick the box beside each paper you want. The Import panel on the right counts them, and says how many come with an open-access PDF and how many with no PDF. Clear selection unticks them all.

From a project, keep Add to this project too ticked to add the papers to that project as well.

  6. The Import button in the Import panel

    Step 6Import them

Choose Import with the number of papers (for example Import 3 papers). Importing uses no credits.

Papers with an open-access PDF are downloaded and read like any import; papers without one are saved with their details and marked No PDF. Papers you already have are not imported twice.

When the import is done, Analyse these papers lets you run AI analysis on them. You see the credits first, and nothing runs until you confirm.
