Why CurTask asks you to keep the tab open

Your papers are read on your own computer first. Here is what pauses if you close the tab, how to pick up again, and what paid plans do differently.

When you import papers, CurTask reads their text on your own computer, in the browser tab you are using. Scanned pages are read there too, with OCR. Your papers' text is read close to you, and CurTask can read many papers at once without making you wait for a server.

While this happens, a note at the top of the page says Keep this tab open while your papers are read. You can keep working in CurTask meanwhile: open another page, write, or browse your library.

The first time: getting ready to read

The first time you use CurTask in a browser on a computer, it downloads what it needs to read your papers. You see Getting CurTask ready to read your papers with a progress bar. This happens once per browser.

After a few seconds you can choose Continue and carry on; the download finishes in the background, shown by a small progress chip at the top of the page. If the download stops, check your internet connection and choose Try again. Your uploads carry on meanwhile.

If you close the tab or leave

If you try to close the tab while papers are being read, your browser asks you first.

On the Free plan, reading pauses until you come back.

When you come back, CurTask shows Reading was interrupted with the papers still waiting. You can:

  • choose Resume to read the rest on this computer, or
  • choose Stop to keep what was read so far. The paper is marked Text incomplete, and you can resume it later from your library or the Queue.

AI analysis waits until all of a paper's text has been read.

On the Student and Researcher plans, reading doesn't pause: if you leave, CurTask finishes the reading for you on our servers. The status then says Finishing on our server.

More than one tab

Papers are read in one CurTask tab at a time. If another tab is doing the reading, the note says Your papers are being read in another CurTask tab. Keep that tab open.

Phones and tablets

Scanned pages are read only on a computer. If you import a scanned paper from a phone or tablet, it waits until you open CurTask on a computer: its status says Waiting for a computer.

Is my paper sent anywhere while it is read?

The file, and the text read from it, go only to your private Global Library, stored in Malaysia, like every import. No AI reads them until you ask. See Private by default.
