On the Student and Researcher plans, the AI can do a first pass of your coding. It reads your papers with your codebook and suggests passages for your codes, or new codes. Nothing is coded until you accept it: every suggestion is marked Suggested and waits for your review.

On the Free plan these buttons carry a Paid plans badge. Coding by hand works on every plan; see Code your papers by hand.

  1. The Suggest codes sheet with its estimate

Step 1Suggest codes for one paper

Open a paper in Coding and choose Suggest codes at the top right (the button shows roughly what it costs, for example Suggest codes · ~8 credits). Suggest codes for this paper opens with the estimate. The switch The AI may suggest new codes is on at first: turn it off if you only want passages for the codes you already have. Then choose Suggest codes with its credit cost to start.

To do the same for several papers at once, use the arrow beside the button and choose Suggest for papers…, then tick the papers.

  2. Step 2Review the suggestions

When the suggestions are ready, an AI suggestions banner shows how many passages match your codes. Suggested passages show a pale strip marked ✦ suggested, and the list beside the paper shows each one with its code and page.

For each one, choose Accept or Dismiss, or use Accept all and Dismiss all. A suggested new code joins the codebook only when you accept it. When a paper is done, Next paper with suggestions → takes you to the next one.

  3. Apply across papers… in a code's menu

Step 3Apply one code across papers

When you have coded a few passages with a code, the AI can look for more like them. In the Codebook, open the code's ⋯ menu and choose Apply across papers…. The AI learns from up to three passages you coded with it, and never adds new codes. In the sheet, the papers that don't have this code yet are ticked; change the ticks if you like, read the estimate, and choose Apply across (it shows the number of papers and the credits) to start. When it finishes, choose Review to go through the results.

  4. The Code all papers with AI estimate

Step 4Code all papers with AI

To start a project's coding in one go, go to the Coding page (the list of papers) and choose Code all papers with AI. The AI suggests passages for your codes in every paper that has text. The estimate lists papers Already coded with this codebook (0 credits) and any Left out: no PDF. Read it, then choose the button that starts it, for example Code 45 papers · about 398 credits · Start.

It runs in the background; you can keep working. Everything it finds stays Suggested until you review it.

What is sent to the AI: the text of the chosen papers, your code names and definitions, and the passages you coded as examples. Your memos and notes are never sent. See Memos and notes are never sent to AI.
