Autosave and working offline

Why there is no Save button, what keeps working when the internet drops, and how your changes catch up later.

CurTask has no Save button. Everything you type, tick or move is saved as you go: notes, matrix values, codes, writing, settings. Pressing ⌘S or Ctrl+S does nothing, on purpose; the list in Settings → Keyboard shortcuts says "Save (not needed: everything saves automatically)".

How to tell your work is saved

The top bar, beside the AI status, always shows where your changes are:

  • All changes saved: everything is safely in your CurTask account.
  • Saving…: a change is on its way.
  • Offline: you have no connection. If you have made changes, the top bar adds that they are saved on this device; they will be sent when you are back online.
  • Some changes can't be saved: your account did not accept a change. Reload the page to see what is saved, and tell us with Send feedback if it keeps happening.

In the bottom-right corner, the status bar also shows Online, Offline or Reconnecting….

What keeps working offline

If your Wi-Fi drops, carry on. These keep working and are saved on your device until you reconnect:

  • Writing your manuscript and changing its sections.
  • Notes on papers.
  • Coding passages by hand, and changes to your codebook.
  • The matrix: reading it, and accepting or editing values. Changed cells show Saved on this device · will sync.

When you reconnect, your changes are sent in the background and the top bar returns to All changes saved.

What needs a connection

  • Anything with AI: analysing papers, filling matrix columns, AI coding, the insight margin and claim checks. These buttons tell you to reconnect.
  • Importing papers and finding papers online.
  • The Synthesis Map stays readable offline, but changes to themes and links wait until you reconnect.
  • Compiling your manuscript.
  • Opening a PDF for the first time. In Coding, CurTask shows the paper's text instead until you reconnect.

If CurTask itself is unreachable

Now and then the CurTask servers may be briefly unavailable. You will see CurTask is taking a short break. with the note that your work is saved on this device and CurTask will reconnect automatically. You don't need to do anything. When it is back, you will see Back online.

Before you sign out

Signing out removes the offline copy of your notes and writing from that browser. They are safe in your account and come back when you sign in again.

If some changes are still only on your device, CurTask warns you first with Some changes aren't saved to your account yet. Choose Stay signed in, reconnect, and wait for the top bar to show All changes saved before you sign out. Sign out anyway loses those changes.

Tip: on a shared or public computer, sign out when you finish, after your changes have saved. See See and sign out your devices.
