Concept
What is sent to AI, and what never is
A plain list of what leaves CurTask for AI and when, what never does, and why your papers are never used to train AI.
No AI runs on your computer. When you use an AI feature, CurTask's servers in Malaysia send the text that feature needs to an AI provider, get the answer back, check it against your paper, and store it on CurTask's servers in Malaysia.
You can see this same list in the app any time, in Settings → AI & privacy.
Nothing is sent until you ask
Importing, reading your papers and OCR for scanned pages send nothing to AI. Text goes to an AI provider only when you:
- confirm an analysis or a matrix fill, after seeing its estimate,
- answer the project interview when you start a project,
- or use an AI feature such as the insight margin, the claim check, AI coding, themes, compare and contrast or a suggested synopsis.
No training, ever
None of CurTask's AI providers trains AI on your data. Each provider is named on the sub-processor list, with its country and what it keeps under its own policy. When a provider is added or changed, the list is updated and you get an email first.
Some providers are outside Malaysia. You agree to this in the End-User Agreement the first time you sign in.
What is sent, feature by feature
- Analysing a paper: the page text of the papers you chose (reference lists are left out).
- A matrix column: the papers' page text and the column definition you wrote.
- The project interview: the project title, your interview answers and the problem statement, only while the interview drafts your statement and research questions.
- AI coding and themes (paid plans): the papers' text, your code names and descriptions, and the passages you coded.
- The writing sidebar: only the part of your writing the tool looks at (the paragraph you ask about, the section you check, or the paragraphs that cite a paper), with passages of your papers and the analysis you accepted. See The insight margin and Check my citations.
- Compare and contrast: passages of the papers you chose and your accepted analysis of them; never your own text.
Anything still marked Suggested is never sent as your analysis. See "Suggested": you stay the author.
On paid plans, the insight margin asks automatically when you pause on a paragraph you changed. Turn Automatic insights off in the Insight tab to stop it.
What is never sent to AI
- Your notes, and your memos on coded passages. See Memos stay private.
- The rest of your writing.
- Project names, outside the project interview.
- Your name and email address.
Searching for papers is not AI
When you discover papers, the words you search for go to free, open catalogues of research, which are outside Malaysia. Find similar papers sends them the public identifiers (DOIs) of some of your project's papers, only when you press it. On paid plans, claim support sends a few short search keywords made from your claim, never your sentences. Your papers, notes, writing and name are never sent.
Where the answers are kept
AI answers are stored only on CurTask's servers in Malaysia, with the page and quote each one rests on. See Private by default and the privacy policy.
