You don't have to be in the Writing lens to cite. While you work through the literature matrix or read a paper's details, you can send a citation straight into a section of your draft, and keep going.

  1. Opening a matrix cell and the Cite in draft menu

Step 1Open a value in the matrix

In the Analysis lens, on the Matrix, click a cell that has a value. Its popover shows the value, the quote and its page, with Edit, Regenerate, History, Open in reader and Cite in draft. Choose Cite in draft.

  2. The Cite only and Insert the quote and cite choices

Step 2Choose citation only, or the quote too

Choose Cite only to add just the citation, or Insert the quote and cite to add the quote in quotation marks with its citation.

If the value is still Suggested (the AI's, not yet accepted by you), the choices read Cite as Suggested and Insert the quote and cite as Suggested. The citation goes into your text marked Suggested until you accept it there. You can also accept the value in the matrix first. See Review matrix values.

  3. The Cite in which section dialog

    Step 3Pick the section

In Cite in which section?, choose the Section. The last section you cited in is already chosen. To start a new one, choose New section… and type its title.

Tick or untick Also insert the quote, then choose Cite here.

The citation goes where you last left the cursor in that section, or at its end. A message confirms it; choose Open to go to the section.

  4. The Cite button in a paper's details

    Step 4Or cite from a paper's details

In a project's library, open a paper's details and choose Cite. The same dialog opens. Pick the section, and under How the citation reads choose In brackets, for example (Laufer et al., 2021), or In the sentence, for example Laufer et al. (2021). Then choose Cite here.

A citation from a matrix value is linked to its page and quote, so it has an evidence line. See Source anchors and the evidence line.
